Lisa Beatman's book, Manufacturing America, arises from her experience in teaching immigrant workers at Ames Paper Factory Somerville Mass. She offers portraits, not of victims but fighters - people fleshed out in all their complexity. Lisa Beatman won first prize in the Lucidity Poetry Contest in 2000. She was an honorable mention for the Miriam Lindberg Poetry Peace Prize. She was awarded a fellowship to the Sacatar Foundation in Brazil and was the recipient of a Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant. She presently manages adult education at the Harriet Tubman House in Boston.
